Teachers' perceptions on the use of the Free Voluntary strategy to improve reading skills

Abstract

Abstract:This research focuses on the benefits of the Free Voluntary Reading (FVR) strategy within the English classroom and the way it influences the teaching - learning process. The aim of this research is to know the teachers’ perceptions on the use of the Free Voluntary Reading FVR as a strategy to improve students’ reading skills. The study was carried out in two private high-schools in the city of Loja in Ecuador. The sample was comprised of 10 teachers in charge of first, second and senior years. Additionally, qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyze the obtained information. A survey was applied and an interview was conducted to the teachers of both institutions in order to determine their perceptions on the use of this strategy within the EFL classroom. Based on the results, it was concluded that most teachers had a positive perception towards the use of the Free Voluntary Reading Strategy within the classroom, since it impacts positively on learners' reading skills, motivates them to read texts, and gives opportunities to learn new vocabulary, expanded their lexicon.
