Using Songs to Improve english speaking skill of Indigenous Students at Amazon Public University

Abstract

Abstract:.Considering that speaking skill is important in order to convey language among human beings, as well its challenging process of acquiring and enhancing this skill, especially speaking skill of EFL/ESL learners, Popular English songs according to learners´ level and class content were placed as the main teaching tools within EFL/ESL virtual class. Songs were combined with varied tasks which involved individual and team work with the purpose of finding out whether their use, help to improve English speaking skills of Indigenous people at a public university in Puyo, Ecuador. To achieve the objective of the present study, qualitative and quantitative methods were applied, furthermore, a survey was developed to gather data containing learners´ perceptions towards songs, also pre- and post-tests-which included items related to vocabulary, verb conjugation, listening and speaking skills. To support speaking assessment, an analytic rubric was developed. Data gathered was analyzed using Microsoft Excel, and then, it was possible to conclude that songs considerable helped students to develop speaking skill. Besides, participants acquired vocabulary, improved listening skill and verb conjugation.
