The use of authentic material through WhatsApp in teaching listening skills in EFL out-of-classroom settings

Abstract

Abstract: This study investigates how the use of authentic materials via WhatsApp can help improve listening skills in English as a foreign language outside the classroom. The research was conducted at a private school in Calvas, Loja, Ecuador, with thirteen second-year high school students with an A1 English level. The objective was to understand students' opinions and identify the advantages and disadvantages of using WhatsApp to share authentic materials. A mixed-method approach was used, collecting quantitative and qualitative data through surveys, a teacher interview, and observations during interventions, which were conducted through a WhatsApp group. Students completed six activities using videos as authentic materials, which were shared via WhatsApp. The results show that the students believe WhatsApp was a useful tool and motivated them to improve their listening skills, as it allowed them to learn with authentic language. This research highlights that WhatsApp can significantly help improve listening skills, empower students, and increase their engagement in learning.
