The use of authentic material through Whatsapp in teaching listening skills in EFL out-of-classroom settings

Abstract

Abstract: The "Use of Authentic Materials via WhatsApp in Teaching Listening Skills in English Settings Outside the Classroom" aims to determine the impact of using authentic materials via WhatsApp on improving the listening skills of EFL students outside the classroom. The research was conducted in the city of Piñas, at the Colegio de Bachillerato, with the participation of 17 second-year high school students with an A2 English level (9 women and 8 men, between 15 and 17 years old), as well as an English teacher. A mixed methodology was used to collect qualitative and quantitative data, using instruments such as questionnaires on student perceptions, advantages and disadvantages of using authentic materials, a teacher questionnaire, and an observation sheet. A WhatsApp group was also created where six videos were shared as authentic materials, accompanied by analysis activities. The results obtained show that the use of authentic materials via WhatsApp significantly contributed to the development of students' listening skills.
