Abstract

Abstract: The research presented is the result of working with community leaders, authorities, teachers, and students in order to diagnose the phenomenon of interculturality as a national reality and as a cross-cutting theme of the basic education curriculum. The theoretical guidelines revolve around culture, its elements, interculturality, and education. The methods we used were participation, direct observation, and the technique of observation, which allowed us to detect instances of indifference and discrimination, primarily directed toward the Indigenous and Afro-Ecuadorian races, violating the fundamental principles to which every person has the right. It is important to emphasize that in the institutions investigated, both teachers and students do not have a clear understanding of what interculturality is. Based on this, we have outlined several alternative guidelines regarding what the profile of a teacher should be in order to address the cross-cutting theme of interculturality.
