Evaluation of an English language program to identify the elements of the Curriculum. A case study of a public high school in Ecuador

Abstract: The new English curriculum in Ecuador has been implemented since 2016 by the Ministry of Education and it is necessary for English teachers to consider it to evaluate the English program of public institutions to identify the elements of the curriculum and analyze our reality to carry out appropriate changes to improve our teaching practice and provide an effective program. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the English program in a public institution based on the perceptions of teachers and students. This case study used quantitative and qualitative methods. The instruments used for data collection included questionnaires and a checklist. The results showed that teachers and students consider English as a useful subject for personal and academic purposes. However, the program requires improvements related to resources, management and administration since there is no financial support. It is recommended to ask parents for their support and take into account some important aspects such as the size of the class and intensity of the program before it is implemented.
