Students perceptions on the efficacy of the teaching behavior and linguistic competence of native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) and non-native English-speaking teachers (NNESTs).

Abstract

Abstract: Given that today, the English language is taught by native and non-native English-speaking teachers, identifying the perceptions that students have about its effectiveness in specific areas of English language teaching and language skills is of relevant importance. Likewise, in our country very few studies have been developed directed at this population of teachers. For this reason, this study examines the strengths and weaknesses of native and non-native English teachers through the perceptions of students using a mixed method. The data was collected through a scale survey completed by eighty-seven students and interviews applied to nine student volunteers for the purpose of validating the data. The results show that both native and non-native English teachers have language and teaching strengths and weaknesses. Thus, students consider that native teachers have linguistic strengths and pedagogical weaknesses. On the contrary, students perceive that non-native teachers have pedagogical strengths, but that they are not fully linguistically competent.
