| Abstract: | Abstract:Educational institutions located in rural communities face exceptional challenges which make EFL teaching and learning even more difficult. Some of the major problems are the lack of quality teachers and the limited access to teaching material to support English language learning. This study is aimed at determining the teachers‟ and students‟ perceptions regarding the use of effective EFL teaching materials and strategies in schools and high schools. This study was conducted in Bolivar, Ecuador by using a mixed method approach. The findings revealed that neither teachers nor students have access to appropriate teaching materials. Concerning teaching strategies used in the English classes, students affirm that are not effective since these are not creative, interactive or dynamic; consequently, they do not feel motivated to learn English; on the other hand, teachers claimed not to be trained in current trends and innovations regarding English teaching strategies and neither in teaching English by using information communication technology in order to enhance English language learning. |
| Description: | Resumen: Las instituciones educativas ubicadas en comunidades rurales enfrentan desafíos excepcionales que dificultan aún más la enseñanza y el aprendizaje del inglés como lengua extranjera. Algunos de los principales problemas son la falta de profesores de calidad y el acceso limitado al material didáctico para apoyar el aprendizaje del inglés. Este estudio tiene como objetivo determinar las percepciones de los profesores y estudiantes con respecto al uso de materiales y estrategias de enseñanza efectivos en inglés como lengua extranjera en escuelas y colegios. Este estudio se realizó en Bolívar, Ecuador, utilizando un enfoque de método mixto. Los resultados revelaron que ni los profesores ni los estudiantes tienen acceso a materiales didácticos adecuados. En cuanto a las estrategias de enseñanza utilizadas en las clases de inglés, los estudiantes afirman que no son efectivas ya que no son creativas, interactivas ni dinámicas; por ende, no se sienten motivados para aprender inglés; por otro lado, los docentes afirmaron no estar capacitados en las tendencias e innovaciones actuales con respecto a las estrategias de enseñanza del inglés y tampoco en la enseñanza del inglés mediante el uso de la tecnología de la información y la comunicación para mejorar el aprendizaje del idioma inglés. |
